Citizens Doing the Extraordinary: Impact Video of the IIDEA Projects

IIDEA | The Incubator for Integration and Development in East Africa creates possibilities for citizens to engage in regional integration. We provide technical, financial and promotional support to innovative and pioneering projects that highlight and contribute towards East African integration.

The East African Community (EAC) is an inter-Governmental Organization of six Partner States: Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan. The Treaty for the establishment of the East African Community was signed on November 30th, 1999 and came into force on July 7th 2000.

The main objective of the Community is to develop policies and programmes aimed at widening and deepening cooperation among the Partner States in mainly political and economic, social and cultural fields, research and technology, defence, security, legal and judicial affairs, for the partners’ mutual benefit.

The Common Market Protocol is a major achievement towards the regional integration of the East African Community (EAC). It provides for the free movement of people, goods, services and capital. Despite the coming into force in 2010 and being currently under implementation, many citizens are not fully aware of the potential benefits it holds for them. Conversely, policymakers in the EAC are in need of qualitative feedback on the extent to which their policies have been implemented on the ground and their impact on ordinary citizens’ lives.

In order to address these issues, the Incubator for Integration and Development (IIDEA) was developed as a joint initiative by GIZ, EAC Secretariat and Regional Dialogue Committee to demonstrate the real-life experiences of regional integration to citizens and provide feedback to policy makers. By showcasing the tangible benefits of integration agenda, IIDEA aims to make integration real for citizens.

Our impact video demonstrates the wide spectrum of initiatives it supports, the stories of the beneficiaries and stakeholders as well as its own achievements, illustrating the real-life stories of citizens engaging with the integration process.

  1. I am personally impressed by the IIDEA project idea! It makes the integration real removing it from the signed protocols and policies into very practical and benefiting the wananchi! From the video it sounds to me like Tanzanians and southern sudan haven't taped the business opportunities the integration offers! I was wondering of a project that will increase awareness of potentiality of IIDEA for secondary school and university students in the partner states, where do I Begin from?
