Our new IIDEA partner Media for Development International (MFDI) organized a workshop on Kiswahili Edutainment Solutions for Regional Integration at the Cultural Art Center in USA River, Tanzania. The idea of the Swahiliwood-project is to produce short web series that communicate different aspects of integration within the EAC subject of discussion for the citizens and to enable them to take advantage of the available opportunities in the region. Filmmakers, creative writers from the region alongside EAC representatives are gathering in this 5-day workshop to come up with a concept for the short web series, which mainly target a young audience to emphasize the benefits of the East African Community (EAC) integration.
Topics to be of interest for young people include the following: love and relationships across borders, languages and communication, cultural commonalities, professional qualifications and certificate standardization, as well as physical movement and trade. It has to be considered that many young people in the region develop a global citizen mindset. This implies that the EAC has to enable them to participate and engage in a global context beginning from the regional and national levels.
After the workshop a performance of traditional music and dance was presented at the Cultural Arts Center to emphasize the deep cultural roots of the EAC that have to be considered when enhancing integration. IIDEA is very much looking forward to the further creative process and implementation of this edutainment approach to make young people aware of the regional opportunities available to enable them to reach their individual potential locally, regionally, and globally.
